Importance of Breathing Physical and Health Education KG First Term

Physical and Health Development

TERM: First Term Lesson Note and Scheme of Work

CLASS: Kindergarten One (KG 1)

SUBJECT: Health Habits

CLASS / TERM: KG 1 FIRST TERM

WEEK: WEEK 9

TOPIC: Breathing

Previous Lesson: Learners have been taught the importance of water to the body in their previous lesson.

BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Define what breathing is.
  • Perform breathing exercises (breathe out and breathe in).
  • Explain why we need to breathe in and breathe out.

CONTENT

We aim for the children to grasp the importance of staying in well-ventilated rooms or buildings. They need to understand that breathing involves taking in fresh air (oxygen) and expelling bad air (carbon dioxide). If they remain in an enclosed space without fresh air, they will continuously breathe in the stale air they exhaled, which can lead to illness.

PROMPTING QUESTION: What is breathing?

RESPONSE: Breathing means taking in fresh air into our body and expelling bad air out of our body.

Presentation

The topic is presented step by step:

Step 1: The class teacher revises the previous topic.

Step 2: The class teacher introduces the new topic.

Step 3: The class teacher encourages learners to contribute their thoughts, correcting them as necessary.

Evaluation

  • What is breathing?
  • Do plants breathe?
  • Do animals breathe?
  • Is air present everywhere?
  • What do we call the air we breathe in?
  • What do we call the air we breathe out?

Class Activities

  1. What is breathing?
    • Breathing is the process of taking in air (oxygen) into our bodies and expelling carbon dioxide.
  2. Why is breathing important?
    • Breathing is essential for survival as it provides oxygen to our cells and removes waste carbon dioxide from our bodies.
  3. What happens when we breathe in fresh air?
    • When we breathe in fresh air, our lungs absorb oxygen, which is transported to our cells to produce energy.
  4. Why do we need to breathe out carbon dioxide?
    • Breathing out carbon dioxide removes waste from our bodies, ensuring that harmful gases do not accumulate in our bloodstream.
  5. How does staying in a well-ventilated room affect our breathing?
    • Staying in a well-ventilated room ensures a constant supply of fresh air, promoting healthy breathing and reducing the risk of respiratory problems.
  6. What can happen if we breathe in bad air?
    • Breathing in bad air can lead to respiratory issues, such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath, and may even cause illness.
  7. What are breathing exercises?
    • Breathing exercises involve deliberate techniques to control and improve our breathing, promoting relaxation and stress relief.
  8. How can breathing exercises benefit us?
    • Breathing exercises can enhance lung function, reduce stress and anxiety, improve focus and concentration, and promote overall well-being.
  9. Can plants breathe?
    • Yes, plants undergo a process called photosynthesis, where they take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen, essentially “breathing” in the opposite way that humans do.
  10. Do animals breathe like humans?
    • Yes, animals also breathe to take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide, although the respiratory systems of different animals may vary.
  11. Is air present everywhere?
    • Yes, air is present everywhere on Earth, although its composition and quality may vary in different environments.
  12. What do we call the air we breathe in?
    • The air we breathe in is called oxygen, which is essential for sustaining life.
  13. What do we call the air we breathe out?
    • The air we breathe out is called carbon dioxide, which is a waste product of cellular respiration.
  14. Why do we breathe faster during physical activity?
    • During physical activity, our muscles require more oxygen to produce energy, leading to an increase in breathing rate to meet this demand.
  15. How does smoking affect breathing?
    • Smoking damages the lungs and respiratory system, leading to reduced lung function, increased risk of respiratory infections, and chronic breathing problems such as emphysema and bronchitis.
