External influence on Nigerian family

Nigeria is a country that obtained her political independent from the British on October 1st, 1960.

But before they coming of the colonial masters, our fore fathers had carved out ways of doing things for themselves and getting themselves organized.

There are traditional rulers that rule the people in accordance with the native laws, customs and culture of the land.

After independence, western culture and traditions crept into our social, moral, religious and daily lifestyles. Our parents no longer live as our fore fathers lived in the older days. There are these external influences on Nigerian life.

These changes in lifestyles are easily visible in the following areas of our lifestyles

1. Language : Language is a medium of communication in which we share thoughts or ideas. The lingua franca of Nigeria is English language. English language is the official language of doing business in Nigeria. There is a need for this because Nigeria is a country with many ethnic groups with Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa been the major ones. Most families in Nigeria no longer speak their own native indigenous ethnic languages at home again and this has affected or influenced  Nigerian family

2. Marriage Practices : Marriage is the legal union of a man and a woman to become husband and wife. In the olden days, our forefathers marriage practices were to involved family members of the intent of the young man and woman to wanted to live together as husband and wife. Gifts were exchanged and prayers would be made for the intending couples. But now a days we have Nikah or moslem wedding which is done in accordance to Islamic teaching and doctrines. We also have church or Christian wedding where the bride will wear white bridal gown and the priest will join the couples together. There is also marriage by ordinance or court marriage. At times some intending couples end up doing two or three different types of wedding which are court marriage, traditional marriage and church marriage before they finally settle down all just because of external influences on Nigerian family

3. Food : Food is good because it is needed for proper body growth and development. In the olden days, most of our forefather were farmers that ate fresh, newly harvested fruits and vegetables and they lived a long healthy life. But nowadays some of the foreign foods that we eat are highly processed and not nutritious. Some of them might have been embalmed just all in the name of keeping them fresh or preservation. Salad, shawarma, bread, canned fish, canned beef, pizza are what we eat now all just because of external influences on Nigerian family

4. Family system :  A family is a group of people who are related by blood, adoption or marriage. In the olden days, our fore fathers practised polygamous family and they had many wives and children that would helped them in their farming businesses. Some of them also inherited their siblings wives and their children when ever their siblings were late. But now, gone are those culture and tradition. Nigerian family lifestyles nowadays is just monogamous. Which means me and my wife with my kids. Fathers are no longer doing farming businesses and school fees are needed to be paid. 5. Dressing : Most parents nowadays are involved in office work that demand that they dress well. This is due to western influences on Nigerian family life. Some professions like like nursing, law, medicine, or policing dictates that you put on some certain types of clothing called uniforms. Even people that are not doing any special jobs or duties wear European dresses to offices. In order to preserve our culture and tradition, some offices or companies allow their members of staff to put on natives on Fridays

6. Science and Technology : Foreigners brought internet, electricity, telephone and DSTV to us. They also introduced boiling rings, electric iron, blender, deep freezer and generators to our homes. All these products of science and Technology have really impacted, changed and modified the ways an average Nigerian do things

Conclusion

The class teacher wraps up or conclude the lesson by giving out short note to summarize the topic that he or she has just taught.

The class teacher also goes round to make sure that the notes are well copied or well written by the pupils.

He or she does the necessary corrections when and where  the needs arise.
