FOOD AND BALANCED DIET
Nutrition is the intake of food by all living organisms(i.e. plants and animals) in order to live well.
A nutrient is a source of nourishment for the body. It is a substance (or food) that provides what is needed by the body for healthy living and growth.
The six essential nutrients (or classes of food) needed by the body are carbohydrates, proteins, fats an oils(or lipid), vitamins, mineral salts and water.
However, in the particular case mineral salts, sometimes each of them is regarded as a nutrient.
Nutrients can be classified as micro nutrients and macronutrients.
Micro Nutrients are needed by the body in small minute quantities
Macro nutrients are nutrients we need in relatively large quantities while micronutrients are nutrients t we need in relatively small quantities, e.g.} vitamins and minerals.
Types of food
Scientists have studied various types of food, and it is now known that each class of food substances has a chemical structure of its own, and performs a particular function in the human body.
It is important to know f what each class of food substances does in the human body, and how different classes of food substances may be combined to provide a balanced diet.
There is a classification of foods, which is not scientific but just a convenient way f grouping foods. Hence, foods may be grouped into the following types: Liquid and solid foods.
Food is a substance that we eat and digest in order to provide energy and help in body building.
Food is any nutritious substance which,
when eaten and digested, can be used by
the body to provide energy, help in body-
building and repair, and in preservation of good health.
Food is also anything taken to provide energy, nutrients, to build the body, to replace worn-out cells and to grow and develop a healthy body. It includes many things we eat and drink except alcohol, cigarettes and drugs
BALANCED DIET: An adequate diet is one that is sufficient in quantity and food nutrients in required amount or proportions.
An adequate diet is called balanced diet.
In terms of quantity, the human body requires more carbohydrates followed by proteins lipids, vitamins and minerals.

- Protective food e.g. vitamins and mineral salts.

Presentation
The topic is presented step by step
Step 1:
The class teacher revises the previous topics
Step 2.
He introduces the new topic
Step 3:
The class teacher corrects the pupils when and where the needs arise .
EVALUATION
- Give three ways of planning for adequate diet.
- What is food
- What is balanced diet
- What are nutrients
- State five examples of food eaten raw
Conclusion
The class teacher wraps up or conclude the lesson by giving out short note to summarize the topic that he or she has just taught.
The class teacher also goes round to make sure that the notes are well copied or well written by the pupils.
