Subject :BASIC Science and Technology

Topic : Basic Electricity

  • Electricity as a form of Energy
  • Types of electricity
  • Cell or battery and the flow of electric current

Class :Primary 5

Term :Third Term

Week :Week 9

Instructional Materials :

  • old unused electric cables
  • old battery dry cell
  • online materials
  • Textbooks
  • Wall charts with pictures

Previous Knowledge : The pupils have been taught the relationship between Degree Celsius and Degree Fahrenheit

Behavioural Objectives :  At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to

  • explain electricity as a form of Energy
  • mention types of electricity
  • describe how to generate flow of electricity from dry cell or battery

Content :

Electricity is a form of Energy that is used to power on most of the appliances like radio or TV that we use at home.

We use electricity a lot. We use electricity for lighting, for grinding, for heating, for ironing, for operating computers, for AC, for pumping water, for freezing things in the fridge, for entertainment, for surgery, for learning etc

Electricity is a form of energy that can give things the ability to move and work. Electricity makes the following to do work or move: bulbs, toys, machines, cars, television etc.

Types of Electricity

  1. Static electricity :  This is the type of electricity that does not flow.
  2. Current electricity : This is the types of electricity that flows steadily from one point to another through a conductor

Note that any material that allows the flow of electricity is known as a conductor. Examples of conductors are cable wires, copper wires, water, human body iron, metal etc

Any material that does not allow the flow of electricity is known as non conductor or insulator. Examples of insulators are are rubber gloves, candle wax plastic, etc

PUPILS ACTIVITIES

Materials required

A plastic comb (or a glass rod or a plastic rod), pupils with dry hair, a piece of dry fur or silk, a desk, light paper, e.g. high-quality toilet paper or filter paper, your science notebook, biro.

Procedure

1. Tear the toilet paper (or filter paper) into many small pieces and spread them on a desk.

2. Use the plastic comb to comb your dry hair a few times and quickly place it above the pieces of paper on the desk.

3. Write your observations in your science notebook. Did you see the small pieces of paper jumping up to hang onto the comb? This may surprise you. But the Greeks also performed this type of activity about 2 600 years ago. They rubbed a material called amber with fur, and it attracted small pieces of paper just as your comb did. Something must be on the comb or the amber that attracts the pieces of paper

METHOD OF GENERATING ELECTRICITY

Electricity generation is the process of generating electrical power from other sources of primary energy.

Electricity can be generated using the following;

1. Hydro (water)-KAINIIJI dam

2. solar –sun

3. machines-generator

4. Batteries

5. Wind

6. Coal

7. Wave

Presentation

The topic is presented step by step

Step 1: The class teacher revises the previous topics

Step 2. He introduces the new topic

Step 3: The class teacher allows the pupils to give their own examples and he corrects them when the needs arise

The simple electric circuit

In order to make a simple electric circuit, you will need a dry cell, a bulb, wire, a soft wooden board, shirt iron nails, etc

Procedure

  1. Get a wooden board and shirt nails
  2. Use the nails to tag the dry cells in such a way that the positive end of one of the batteries touches the negative end of the other battery
  3. Connect the wires
  4. Roll up the peeled part of the wire to the neck of the bulb
  5. Connect the wire to the extreme end of the other bulb
  6. The bulb should light up if there is complete electric circuit

Presentation : The topic is presented step by step

Step 1. He revises the previous topics

Step 2. He introduces the new topic

Step 3 : He allows the pupils to give their own examples and he corrects them when the needs arise

Evaluation :

  1. Mention two types of Electricity
  2. Mention four uses of electricity
  3. Explain how to construct a simple complete electric circuit by making use of dry cells or batteries and wire
  4.  Describe how electricity is generated and conducted from one point to another.
  5. . Name the types of electricity.
  6. identify the types of energy
  7. Explain how electricity is produced and used.

Conclusion :He gives a brief note and he goes round to mark
